A Little Bit About The History of the Kilt
The kilt and its predecessors can be traced back to the early 16th century, but as long as there’s whiskey on the table, you’ll be hearing stories how it originated in Ireland whilst the clan across the Irish Sea will argue that it originated in England, and of course a little bit north, Scotland lays claim to the origins of the kilt. We will leave the argument up to the academics, but suffice it to say, the kilt was worn throughout the Highlands of Scotland and a similarly in Ireland and the Ilse of Man. In Ireland it can be traced back to the long tunic or Léine. Scotland is where the world “kilt” originates, but it is a derivative of the old Norse language, kjalta.
No matter what you called it, the kilt was a garment that was worn from the waist showing the bare legs of the men. In earlier versions, it was a longer piece of material that was called the Great Kilt, and it draped around the upper body as well as hung from the waist. So whether the kilt developed from an Irish léine or a Norse kjalta, it was probably just a long tunic that was later shortened to just the short waist-worn garment we know today as the kilt.
Today the kilt is worn as traditional dress for all Celtic celebrations, Scottish and Irish alike. There are formal kilt outfits that can costs thousands of dollars, which are worn for weddings and other high ceremonies. But hopefully, if you just want to wear a little Celitc traditional kilt outfit for fun or a single occasion, then you came to the perfect place here at Kilt Costume .net!
